Get the most from social networking

I recently was a guest on Joan Friedlander’s Beyond Billable Hours monthly
teleforum to discuss social networking.

We discussed:

1. How to get the most from Social Networking by combining it with face-to-face networking.
2. How it may be the future that replaces email, and why that might be attractive.
3. How business owners can use the 2 primary networks to increase your exposure and help develop your products and classes.
4. Why Facebook is not just for “kids” and how to use it to promote your business.
5. How various people make choices about which invitations to accept, and which to decline.
6. How to get started if you’ve not yet done so.

Please listen to the recording and chime in

Wiki Six: Starting Your Own Wiki

Thousands of people go to Wikipedia.org every day to get information on a plethora of topics, but most don’t realize how easy (and fun) it is to create their own wiki.

About six months ago, we decided to implement our first wiki. We wanted to create a private resource for internal use that would be a place to document company processes, post contact information and useful articles and share knowledge. To do this, we chose the mediawiki platform as the software to use for our company wiki. Although our team is learning to integrate the wiki into their day-to-day activities, things are starting to take shape. Over the course of this implementation, we’ve learned some important tips and elements to consider before starting a wiki.

An excellent resource to evaluate and select your wiki platform can be found at www.wikimatrix.org.

What Is A Wiki?
You can find several working definitions, but I like to describe wikis as Web sites that allow visitors to add, remove, edit and change content, typically without the need for registration. It also permits linking among any number of pages. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring.

And of course props to our supporters — you guys rule. Please use these vendors if there is an opportunity to do so. They help keep our association alive and active!

Space Conservation.

I recieved an e-newsletter from a friend mine who brought up a topic that has been a pet peeve of mine I started using computers.

The issue is that some people are still putting two spaces after periods.

The extra space dates back to the days of the typewriter, when each character occupied the same amount of space. A period took the same space as any other character, so you needed that extra space to create a visual break between sentences.

In today’s world it’s typographically correct to put only one space after a period.

Ever since type went electronic, fonts are fixed-width and each character’s space is determined by its width. So now the period occupies only a small amount of space and an ensuing single space is all the visual break you need between sentences. This also eliminates visual rivers through a full page of type and will improve readability.

So take your thumb off the space bar and make all your documents look great.

apple iPhone

Apple strikes once again with the new iPhone. I think it might be the coolest looking new phone since the Razor or the Pearl. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of them (despite the price tag).
